Vinyl does not fix a wet wall
If the sheathing is soft, new vinyl over it locks the water in. We open those spots and repair them. The moisture inspection is the tool we use when we are not sure yet.

Vinyl Siding Installation
Vinyl is the straightforward re-side when the budget and the architecture agree. It is not waterproof by itself. We hang it so the panels can expand, we flash the openings in the wall behind it, and we use a heavier profile where the front elevation has to hold up next to cedar neighbors. If the house wants Hardie, we will say that too.

- Standard or insulated vinyl in a profile close to the original lap
- Housewrap and flashing completed before the first course
- Starter, J-channel, corners and soffit from the same system
- Panels locked but not nailed tight, so summer heat does not buckle them
- A color that survives an HOA packet
Details that change the result
Dark colors move more
Deep colors expand. We follow the manufacturer’s nailing and do not face-nail a panel to force a joint.
Insulated vinyl
Foam-backed panels add a little comfort and a stiffer face. They also change the trim thickness at windows. We mock that up before we order the whole house.

Before you call
Can you install vinyl over Hardie or wood?
Only if the wall is dry and flat enough, and even then we usually tear off. A second skin makes windows look recessed and hides leaks.
Will vinyl crack in a cold snap?
Quality vinyl rated for this climate is fine. Brittle, bargain coil is not. We spec a known product and keep spare panels from the same lot.
How does it compare to James Hardie on price?
Vinyl is usually the lower first cost. Hardie costs more up front and asks less of you later. We put both numbers on the same house.
