Patio Doors onto the Deck

The patio door is where the house meets the deck. We replace fogged sliders and tired swinging doors with insulated units, and we coordinate the sill with the decking height so you do not step up into a puddle or down onto a trip edge. If a new deck or a cover is in the same project, this door is drawn with it — posts, swing and the roof above included.

Included in this scope

  • Sliding patio doors and swinging French-style doors
  • Sill pans tied to the weather barrier and the deck flashing
  • A threshold height planned with the deck boards or the patio slab
  • Low-E glass, screens and a lock you can use from inside
  • Coordination with railings so the swing and the guard do not fight

Details that change the result

01

Slider versus swing

A slider is the wide, easy opening. A swing door seals tighter and looks more like an entry. On a covered deck, either can work. We stand in the opening with you before we order.

02

The deck crew and the door crew are the same project

This is the link to deck construction. A door installed after a deck is framed to the wrong height is how thresholds get improvised.

03

Covers change the exposure

A door under a new patio cover stays drier and can take a different sill. If the cover is even a maybe, decide before the door is built.

Questions

Before you call

My slider is fogged. Do I replace the whole frame?
Almost always, yes. The glass seal failed and the track is usually worn with it. A glass-only swap in an old frame is a short repair we rarely recommend.
Can the door be wider than the old one?
Sometimes, if the header can take it or we add one. That is a structural question and often a permit. We will not widen an opening casually between two visits.
Will water still sit at the track?
A new slider has weeps that have to stay clear, and the deck outside has to pitch away. We fix both. A deck that slopes back at the door will defeat a perfect sill.
