Cedar Siding

Cedar siding is the Eastside classic, and it fails when it is nailed tight over a wet wall with no gap to dry. We install bevel, lap and tongue-and-groove cedar on a rainscreen, with stainless fasteners and a finish chosen before the boards go up. Clear vertical grain where you will see it, a tighter budget grade where you will not.

Included in this scope

  • Bevel, lap or tongue-and-groove cedar in a grade matched to the elevation
  • Rainscreen gap and flashed openings
  • Stainless fasteners that will not bleed through the finish
  • Starter, corner and window trim in the same species or a painted companion
  • First finish coat, or a documented plan to leave it to weather

Details that change the result

01

Grade is visible

A knotty board on a front elevation reads as a shortcut. We spec the grade per wall, not one price for the whole house that quietly drops the face.

02

Finish before it grays

Cedar that sits unfinished through a winter is harder to coat later. The stain or oil is in the project, not a someday list.

03

Mix it with fiber cement

Many remodels run cedar at the entry and soffits and Hardie on the field. We detail that joint so it looks designed. The house in our photos does exactly that: lap siding with a wood soffit.

Questions

Before you call

How often is cedar siding refinished?
Exposed south and west walls in King County often want attention every 3–5 years. Protected north walls and soffits go longer. We name the product so the next coat matches.
Can you repair cedar without re-siding?
Yes, board by board, when the wrap behind it is still doing its job. If the paper is dust, a patch is a leak with new wood on it.
Cedar or Hardie?
Cedar when the architecture wants grain and you will maintain it. Hardie when you want the lap look with a longer repaint cycle. We price both.
